This week, I had a revelation. This often happens when I’m taking a social media break and choose to sit with the silence of my own thoughts.
As you know I am building something new, and on paper it made sense. It looked good. It was aligned with what I said I was doing. But every time I sat down to work on it, my energy dropped. I wasn’t excited or curious about what to do next. I wasn’t proud of it in the way I usually am when I’m creating something that’s truly mine.
Instead I begin to feel a dread that I would again walk away from something I knew could have a massive impact if I could just get the model to work with me and my life and not against it.
So I stopped and asked myself a hard question. Why am I forcing myself to build something that doesn’t feel good? And if I have to power to create anything I want, then what would this new thing look like?
I immediately begin to ignore the voice in my head regurgitating what the experts would tell me and instead decided to listen to my own voice.
And listen, it was like I was stepping back into my body for the first time in years. I could see the entire vision play out in front of me, in stages, over the span of a few years. So I changed it. I shifted the direction of what I was building, and not because anything was wrong with the first version, but because it just didn’t feel right in my body and it didn’t honor who I said I was becoming.
You won’t notice much of a difference from the outside looking in because my promise will remain the same. But the vehicle, the medium, the intensity and the voice I will use to do this work is what has shifted. And the moment I made that change, I felt relief. My energy came back. I felt excited again.
That’s when it hit me. My body knew the truth before my mind was ready to admit it. This something I’ve learned over and over again.
The body often knows before the logic catches up. There’s a scientific reason for this that goes back to our Vagus Nerve and how the nerves fire off information from our gut before making its way up to our brain signaling danger, but that’s another post (maybe even a YT video) for another day.
When Something Feels Off, Pay Attention
Here’s the thing, most of us don’t ignore that “something’s off” feeling because we don’t care. We ignore it because we’re used to pushing through. We’ve been trained to finish what we start, to make it work, to be grateful for what we have even when it doesn’t feel right anymore.
So when something stops feeling right, we don’t stop. We override it. We tell ourselves we’re just tired, or distracted, or going through a phase. We convince ourselves that excitement isn’t necessary and that discipline is what matters most.
But over time, you start to notice patterns. The same resistance every time you sit down to work. The same low-level dread when you think about continuing. The way your body tightens instead of opens when you imagine moving forward.
What you’re experiencing is not laziness or a lack of ambition. It’s information that something isn’t right, that it just doesn’t work anymore. And the longer you ignore it, the louder it gets.
There’s this quote that I love that I learned about it in the book, Talent is Never Enough, some 17 years ago. I mean, it is one of my Top 5 favorite quotes of all time and it goes:
“Once you discover you’ve been leading half a life, the other half will haunt you until you develop it.” - Phillip Brooks
Whew. You can ignore the voice all you want, but it will haunt you until you own it or you take your final breath.
Changing Direction Doesn’t Mean You Failed
One of the biggest lies we’re taught is that changing direction means you quit too soon or gave up on yourself. In reality, changing course often means you listened to that nagging little voice that you can’t seem to quiet.
We’ve also been taught that consistency equals strength and that changing your mind means you didn’t know what you were doing in the first place.
This is not true.
Changing course doesn’t erase the work you’ve done. It doesn’t make you flaky or unfocused. It means you’re responding to what you’ve learned and you’re letting experience inform your next move instead of clinging to a decision just because you already announced it.
But here’s the part to remember, nothing you’ve built is wasted. Every step you took clarified something and staying on a path that no longer fits just to prove you can stick it out often costs more than adjusting when you know better.
And joy matters here too. You’re allowed to be happy and excited about the work you’re doing. In fact, you should chase it at all costs. I mean, we get this one life. Why not fill it with as much joy and happiness as possible.
Following Joy Takes Trust
Now following joy doesn’t mean blowing up your life, chasing every impulse or avoiding responsibility. It means trusting yourself enough to listen when something feels lighter, clearer, or more aligned.
It also means letting go of the need to explain every decision. You don’t owe anyone a perfectly packaged reason for changing your mind, except maybe your spouse, there should be a conversation. But you don’t need permission to pivot, because revelations don’t come to create chaos. They come to help you course-correct before you drift too far from yourself.
When you start honoring what feels good in your body, it means you’re paying attention and being responsive to what brings you closer to clarity and what pushes your further away from it.
It also means that you’re building a life that reacts to who you are now, not who you were when you made the original plan.
Your Reset This Week
Ask yourself this, honestly.
What am I continuing that no longer feels right?
And then ask yourself this.
What would it look like to make a small adjustment instead of forcing myself to push through?
You don’t have to burn anything down. Just notice what feels lighter when you imagine choosing differently.
Closing
Revelations aren’t rare. We just get better at ignoring them.
Pay attention to what shifts your energy. Trust what your body is telling you. Notice where it relaxes and where it tightens. And then let yourself change direction without turning it into a story about failure.
Don’t worry, you’re not losing your way. You’re just finally listening.
Welcome to the show.
