I want to talk about something that sounds simple but is actually very hard for most of us.

Giving yourself grace.

I mean real grace. The kind that shows up when you look at your life and realize you did the best you could with what you knew at the time.

A couple of weeks ago we talked about about how something might be opening for you. That there was this subtle knowing that something new might be possible.

But here is what I have learned.

Sometimes the reason we do not step into what is opening is not for fear of the future. It is because we judge ourselves about the past.

You can feel the pull toward something better. You can sense the shift. And then that voice shows up. The one that reminds you of what you should have done sooner.

The one that tells you you wasted time. The one that whispers that you are behind, or that you do not deserve the next thing because of how the last thing went.

But chile, hindsight is loud. It always sounds smarter than you felt in the moment.

You made decisions based on the information, capacity, and courage you had at the time. And constantly punishing yourself for not being who you are now back then is unfair.

Listen, that voice will do everything it can to keep you standing still and feeling small, but you can’t let it.

And that is where grace becomes necessary.

You cannot move toward what feels lighter while dragging self-judgment behind you.

You Were Doing The Best You Could

I want you to really sit with that sentence for a moment.

You were doing the best you could with the tools you had.

Not the best that today’s version of you could do. Not the best with hindsight and maturity and experience. The best you could with that same information, capacity, courage, and awareness you had at the time.

It’s easy to look back at an older version of yourself and feel frustrated. You see what you didn’t see then. You understand what you didn’t understand then.

You wish you had the boundaries you have now, the clarity you have now, the self-awareness you have now.

But growth doesn’t work that way. You do not wake up fully formed. You live, you try, you adjust, you learn. Every misstep carried a lesson.

Every choice, even the messy ones, moved you toward who you are becoming.

You learn, and then you see differently. You evolve, and then you judge your old self through the lens of who you are now.

And again, that is not fair.

The person you were five or ten years ago was navigating life with the tools you had. You were surviving what you knew. And that deserves your compassion, not your criticism.

Grace Is Not An Excuse To Stay Stuck

Let me be clear about something. Giving yourself grace does not mean pretending nothing happened.

It does not mean avoiding responsibility and it does not mean staying where you are and calling it acceptance.

Grace simply means you stop attacking yourself while you grow.

You can acknowledge that you would handle something differently today without turning that realization into evidence that you failed.

You can admit that you tolerated too much without labeling yourself weak.

You can also recognize that you did not know then what you know now without turning that gap into shame.

Here’s the thing, growth without grace turns into you punishing yourself by repeating the same patterns that lead to the same miserable outcomes, because you don’t feel worthy of the beauty that’s available to you.

While growth with grace turns into wisdom.

And wisdom is what allows you to walk into what is opening instead of shrinking back from it.

You Are Allowed To Evolve

There is a version of you that no longer fits. There are standards you now hold that you did not hold before.

There are conversations you would approach differently and there are boundaries you would set more quickly.

This is the core of what evolution looks like.

You are allowed to outgrow who you were. You are allowed to forgive yourself for what you did not know.

You are allowed to move forward without dragging every old regret into your new chapter.

If something is opening for you, it does not require you to be flawless. It requires you to be willing. And willingness grows much faster in an environment of grace than in one of self-criticism.

Simply put, you cannot build a new life while constantly prosecuting the old one.

Your Reset This Week

Think about one decision from your past that you still judge yourself for.

Write down what you were dealing with at that time. What were your responsibilities? What were you afraid of? What did you not know yet?

Then write one sentence of compassion to that version of yourself.

To help you out, you can start the sentence with either “It’s ok that” or “I understand why.”

See what shifts when you stop fighting your own history.

Closing

You do not need to carry every mistake like a badge of shame nor do you need to relive every regret to prove you learned something.

Something is opening for you right now. You deserve to meet it without carrying unnecessary shame.

Because you are growing and evolving.

So give yourself grace. Not because you were perfect. But because you were human.

And being human is enough.
